i did last year's for them, too, only i put

'loves' instead of 'favorites'.

i think i may change the word every other year.

i printed a dozen from picture perfect, a local shop.

i like it because i get nice, professional photos,

without the shipping.

i have been wanting to get emily a doll house for as

long as i can remember.

i'd look at small houses for her age and think about

purchasing them,

then decide to hold off and get something she

could grow into.

i don't know if you've seen how much houses cost,

but those mini houses are anywhere from $100-$200.

we are on an extremely tight budget,

so that's just not an option.

i mean, i could buy new curtains for my whole house with

that money.

and i need new curtains, people.

so after staring at one of my favorite antiques for

months, contemplating what i could do

with it, i decided to turn it into a mini whyte house.

[the before's. this is a 1928 radio...still works, but with some super scary ratted wiring.
i just took out the heavy contraptions in the back (i kept it all, mom) and went to work sanding and painting it. did i mention my palm sander broke before this?? sanded by hand. ugh. i removed the partition board, which was a task and a half and filled the cut in from it w wood filler. i also took off the screen for the speaker. ]

do you see all of the grooves on this thing?? i dreaded painting this so much. i used KILZ oil based spray paint primer to get in all of the crazy little holes.

last night i was up til 1am hanging up photos and finishing wall paper to the upstairs room. i was on the phone w my mom through part of it and she said, "when you get to heaven, don't mention what you did to the radio to your dad". haha. my dad was a picker before picking was cool. back then, it was just known as 'hoarding'. ha. he kept everything...and while i wanted to keep this radio from him(it has my teeth marks on the front from when i was a toddler), i didn't want to have it in my house if it didn't have a purpose. now it has a purpose.

during the makeover.

i'm a big fan of the cartoon & books, 'charlie & lola'. i'll admit, the accents pull me in straight away, but i love the illustrations.
i knew right away that i wanted to craft something with the same bright colors and with lots of different patterns mixed in.

photo frames were made from a starbucks coffee sleeve and two match boxes.

i don't sew, so all the fabrics put together for this house were hand stitched. i made sleeping beauty a new blanket out of an old dress of emily's.

my awesome niece, famie, talked me through photoshop and showed me how to make a collage of mini photos.

i will forever be thankful for that tutorial!!

the family photo frame is made from a party favor lid.

i'm not completely done with the bench. it will have a pillow on top, as well.

the reason i used emily's dress for this blanket was that the fabric that lined the dress inside had shrunk and was much shorter than the ruffled front. i cut apart the inside, cut off some of the ruffled front and stitched it to one piece of the inside material, then turned them to the back side and stitched the 3 pieces together. i seriously can't work a machine to save my life and hand stitching is kind of therapeutic, so i didn't mind.

i picked out some of my favorite photos and glued them all onto their frames, hot glued the frames on the wall. i really wanted to velcro them on so that i could change them out, but the velcro made them stick off the wall too far.

the kitchen has a 'yum' sign(i didn't have the letters to do 'free food' like i wanted to), a cork board with more photos(the black & white shot is on the kid's bedroom wall) and has a twig for a curtain rod. :) the food/containers on the counter are all from scrapbook paper. i just cut the little things out and glued them on. i'm thankful to be an excellent paper cutter. :) i painted on the farm sink and there will be a dishwasher painted on the opposite bottom section. i don't care if the house is fake, everyone needs a dishwasher. :)

the living room has a fireplace, stockings, framed photo

and a christmas tree. a very glittery one, at that.

i haven't done any papering to the floor yet(that's a loose sheet), but it'll be done, too.

i cut the stockings out from em's old tights. they were her favorite and she was so sad she couldn't wear them again this year. i cut these from the top and made socks out of the remainder of the tights. she wears them all of the time now. :)

i also painted a gold mini frame pink, put some fireplace paper in it for a mat and placed em's 5 year photo with all of her 5 year old 'LOVES'. it's one of my favorite photos from our photo shoot last december. she'll be having a 6 year old shoot in 11 days! agh!!

i'm extremely cheap and always use what i already have lying around the house.

what i spent:

$10 on 2 cans of KILZ oil based primer

$7 on latex white paint

scrapbook paper from hobby lobby & michaels--

maybe $5. maybe.

mod podge--i ran out midway--$4

tree $2--wal-mart

the photos i put on a 10x10 collage on photoshop and made

them mini sized. the 10x10 sheet at picture perfect (new market square) was $4.

i already had all of the fabric scraps, acrylic paint

used, brushes for it, and most of the "frames".

i bought the pink one(gold) frame was .99 cents.

starbucks sleeve was free--i got free hot chocolate

for taking my brother-in-laws photos last week. :)

oh, and my BIL gave me free labor--

he cut the bottom shelf for me(while on vacation)

before our photo session.

sleeping beauty was more expensive than everything for the house...

she came w a book, fairies and bed for $34 at target.

it was the only thing em asked for for christmas..

and i couldn't find a bed i liked.

it was perfect. :)

i won't lie and say this hasn't been time consuming, but it's been the best time consuming project to date. for the first time i'm glad that her dad will be gone[with the blasted navy]for christmas...it means we get to have christmas a week early and i don't have to wait 25 more days to show it to her!!! ;)

just like that thanksgiving is done and christmas

season is here!

we skipped shopping, but there were plenty

family shenanigans.

i am a huge fan of christmas light photos.

bokeh, especially.

now that i've accomplished this one,

i'm pretty sure i'll be doing these all the time now. :)

i also love ttv shots.
this is a sad example, but close.
since i only have a 50mm right now, it's a tad difficult to pull it off. instead, i just turned off the lights around me, held my old argus 75 at arms length and shot through it's lens with my canon xti.
close enough. :)

can't wait to shoot some more holiday photos!
now i just need snow....

i think i've found my photo stage master.

dina's husband had asked me during mother's day

to do photos of the kids.

however, when the 100 degrees started in may,

i said, "no photos til fall".

i'm glad we waited.

dina grew up in garden plain and had a favorite

childhood spot all picked out for this shoot.

old train tracks that are never used make the perfect spot for photos. :)

dina had it in her head that it would be okay for me to bring my kids along. i'm sure by the first 3 minutes, she realized that was a bad idea. it was nice to have my child helping porter down the rocky hill, though. :) that was pretty much the only help i received from them, though. at one point, aiden was running in front of me as i was snapping. ugh.
my husband owes me big for not making him take aiden with him for military trainings. ; )

dina set up a picnic next to the tracks. in order to get her kids to cooperate, she may or may not have had them skip lunch that day....

this was the ONLY time my kids sat still.
seriously.

though she didn't want "family" photos, we had to do one with dina and the kids.

and i had to include an awesome blooper shot.

just like that, everyone was in play mode.
so that's just what we did.

do you see the colorful arrangement in the background?? dina had all of that prepared for this shoot. this is why we're friends. :) we decided at the last minute to swing by my house and grab my chairs, too. glad we did. love all of the colors!

birthday party: comic book style

this weekend, i had the honor of

photographing a 7 yr old's birthday

party.

not just a random kid, but one that my

kids have become good friends with.

and he happens to be one of my best friend's kids, as well.

about this time last fall,

i was shooting this baby shower at her house.

this party definitely did not fall

short of her last one.

dina is a woman who is not afraid to

include detail work in her parties.

this year's theme:

comic books.

dina's son, tucker, has been sucked

into the world of comics.

his dad, a collector of batman comics,

introduced tucker to his childhood collection,

thus starting tucker's new obsession. :)

so it was no surprise to hear that tuck

wanted a super hero birthday party.

dina made everything by hand.
even the cupcakes.

seriously.

for the crafts, you need to understand that she is a woman with a printer...and she knows how to use it!

each of her 3 kids has a birthday tablecloth that they put their handprints on every year.

a "T" for tucker, again made by dina.

the party favors included various pieces of candy, some with x-men packaging, of course.

oh, and my son's favorite...

a glow-in-the-dark bracelet,

which he took to school on monday for

show-n-tell.

dina just recently painted her hutch,

as well.

it looked so great for the party!

the crazy birthday boy.

he always makes the weirdest faces at my camera.

beyond the comic book covers displayed on the window you get a glimpse into dina's craft room where she creates all of her cute hair accessories and jewelry for 'brag bling & bows'. we have started quite a collection of her stuff at our house. :)

one of tuck's friends donned her halloween costume for the party. so awesome.

the games were made by dina's dad last year for the school fun night.
seriously amazing.

there were like 25 kids at this party.

it's a good thing dina's backyard is big.

cake time became "break time" for everyone.
it was much needed.

i'm very thankful for him.

tuck opened every card, reading each one, and opened every present with careful thought.
needless to say, present time took a long time.

typically i wouldn't share what i gave someone for their birthday, but since i made it, i can share. :)
my brother grew up reading & drawing comics. being that he was 4 years older than me, i wanted to be included in what he was into. so i read comics, too. i was excited to get to make this for tucker. i did a batman one, too, but this is my favorite. it took a while to draw it out free hand and then i ended up not using the drawing and just painting it free hand. i don't think i've ever been this stressed about an art project in my life. i'm pretty proud of it. i may have to steal it back someday.

hahaha.

katie: senior session--st. joseph, mo

this past weekend,

we made our annual trip to st. joseph, mo.

we had a great time with family as we

took the kids fishing, had a "campfire",

did some vintage shopping...and pierced my ears at the mall.

part of the reason for the trip was for

family time, the other for a senior

session that i had scheduled last fall

during a college senior's shoot.

the client's sister was graduating high school

the following year and i was asked to come back out.

i happily said "yes".

this was a free session.

i find that i enjoy doing those so much

more than i do when i charge.

this is katie.

she'll be attending missouri western,

just as her brother did,

and majoring in special ed.

andrew and his dad were in a photo at the end of andrew's session last year,

so it was only fitting to get one of katie and her mom this year. :)

ideas for painless family photos.

with the small preview of fall last week,

i started thinking about christmas photos.

i mean,

we did ours this summer on vacation,

so we're done.

(smartest thing i've ever done!)

however, most people do their photos for

their christmas cards in the fall.

ah, photos.

to the mom, photos mean stress.

buying new outfits.

buying more new outfits 'cause you

changed your mind about your outfit

(that might only be me, though. :))

non-cooperating weather.

haircuts.

finding a photographer.

to the dad, photos mean, well, an unhappy mom.

fighting with the kids to stay still.

spending money you were saving.

(a photographer costs how much?!)

having to pose when you'd rather be

watching a game.

for the kids, photos mean yelling.

yelling at the kids.

parents yelling at each other.

racing around the house to get ready

and yelling for everyone to hurry up.

what's fun about that??

no one said photos had to be done the same

way EVERY YEAR.

or by a professional photographer.

it's okay to do things differently.

i have found a TON of ideas on pinterest over

the last few months,

some i've tried myself.

here are some ideas, new and old, for everyone:

1. for the newly married couple.

you just took a TON of wedding photos that were sure to be expensive.

use those!

saves your cheeks from all of that smiling.

get with your photographer and order some prints. or if you bought a cd of your photos,

print them. (i'll cover where to print at further down)

2. for the non-photogenic/i hate smiling.

try something fun.

this could work for the newlywed, too.

as much as your grandma would love to

see your happy face,

sometimes the simple intimate photo is better.

to me the body language says,

"we love each other a lot".

more importantly, if you're on a very tight budget that doesn't leave room for a photographer,

this one could be easily done by a friend.

3. only child? focus on just them.

there's all of this talk about how mom's should be in the photos, too...

but honestly, what tired mom wants to display the bags under her eyes??

i sure don't.

this photo shows that there are parents

(we tend to forget about the parents when there's a new little one around anyway),

but puts the main focus on the child.

4. let them be kids.

no one said kids have to look at the camera.

candids are a big part of my life.

let the kids play or do something that represents them.

we just took this shot yesterday.

my kids are best friends.

seriously.

they want to do everything together.

including running away from their mom.

(and yes, there was yelling on my part. :))

i adore candids.

get on the floor with your sons as they play with their star wars toys.

shoot through the window of your girl's

dollhouse as she's holding her princess doll.

capture the everyday.

this last shot is from a post for those of us who are always behind the camera and how we should join in on the photos.
i love this photo because it is something that you could do in your christmas jammies, reading 'twas the night before christmas'. it's simple, festive, cheap(both clothes and not having to have a photographer present) and candid. it's something i will personally be doing with my kids while my husband is deployed.

now for the second part of this post:

printing.

everyone wants to print on a budget.

however, remember that you get what you pay for.

i found this photo on (again) pinterest and i

thought it was absolutely perfect.

the post gives you a better description of everything, so you can read that here. i encourage you to take what's written to heart.
we made the mistake of doing photos cheaply last year through wal-mart and got a walgreens result. i was so upset. lesson learned.

i recommend mpix to everyone i know and use it myself(it's a kansas based business). i love how the photos come out and how quickly they make it to my house. if you've never looked into them before, please do so! if it intimidates you trying to put photos together online, let me know...i'd be happy to help you out! or try a locally owned shop to do your printing. i'm sure they'd appreciate your business.

PHOTOGRAPHERS:

lastly, if you're wanting to do photos with a professional, book a session immediately. booking in the summer is typically the best time, but some will still have slots open now.

school starting has meant free time for mama!

i'm a big fan of this.

this week, i took a walk BY MYSELF through my

favorite local park and did a 'nature photo shoot'.

recently, i found a photo on pinterest that had a child holding

a printed sign with her grade and teacher's name on it for a first day of school photo.

super cute idea.

a lot of people are doing them now.

my friend did one for her first grader, kindergartener,

and even one for her 2 yr old that says

"first day of being an only child...finally!"

haha.

so great.

well, not to be left out, we did our own.

my oldest left for her first day of kindergarten today.

instead of typing and printing a sign

(since i don't have a printer),

we used a chalkboard i had picked up in st. joe,

a chalkboard marker and my daughter's writing skills.

she loves to write and copy letters,

so i let her do this all by herself.

i love the idea of having them write their own

and being able to see how they've grown each year,

both in height and writing skills.

we will definitely continue this tradition.

at the end of july,

we celebrated my husband's grandmother's 90th

birthday.

we even created her own birthday card.

[when doing this, make sure your driveway isn't cracked. :)]

now, i absolutely do not do photos in the

summer...if i don't have to.

i'm a miserable grump in the heat,

this summer being no exception.

we're on summer #3 of no a/c in our

vehicle, so if i'm forced to go anywhere

during the day, i'm soaked before i even get there.

40 degrees is sounding pretty awesome right now.

i'm sure i'll complain about it soon enough. :)

however, this week i was forced to take some outdoor photos.

i felt really bad for turning someone

down for photos and then doing

this shoot.

this is my friend stacie.

we grew up 2 blocks away from each other,

were in the same 4th grade class [i still have one of her crayons], and then went on to middle school together,

as well.

her mom was always my favorite because she

was really tall like my mom.

when your mom is 6ft and all you hear is

"wow, your mom is really tall",

it's nice to have someone around who can relate. :)

she and i didn't get to go to high school

together, but we kept in touch.

thanks to facebook, i've been able to pass

on camera/lens info, help her decide which ones to purchase and even talked her into getting lightroom...just last month. :)

when stacie contacted me, saying she'd be in town and if i could survive the heat to do her photos...well, i'll be honest...

i was hesitant.

it's really hot out!!!

ha.

and then i said yes.

thankfully, it was 80 degrees in the morning.

that day topped out at 112.

whew.

my friend krista is a big fan of disney.

mickey mouse is very present in she and her son's life.

they take trips to disney quite often...

it's more of a second home to them.

i'm sure when i go someday i will have her

put our trip together for me. :)

being the big fans of mickey that they are,

it was not surprising to me to walk in and see this balloon.

krista's son, antonio, turned 2 and asked if i could come

over again and shoot the party for her.

it was fun to see a framed photo that i took of

his 1st birthday party on the wall.

like i said.

they're all about mickey. :)

antonio's shoes were too cute not to shoot.

krista went through a terrible divorce last fall.

now i don't go around telling people personal facts about

my clients, but i mention it to share this photo.

this photo of krista speaks volumes to me.

she put this party together by herself,

including the inflatable.

heck, she took an almost 2 year old to disney

by herself.

this year of "firsts" has been hard,

but she's powered through it and i'm so proud of her.

you're amazing, krista.

not many people can say that they have christmas photos for their family done in JUNE.

i can.

we're finally back from my dream vacation

spot, washington.

i know...there are gorgeous places like maui.

however, i burn really easily.

burning to a crisp and being in pain is not

my idea of an awesome vacation.

whidbey island, however, has water, beaches AND no burning sun, due to a lot of cloudy days.

i could seriously get use to having a view of water to look at everyday.

while we were on vacay,

we had our family photos taken.

i imagine this fall to be a pretty hectic time

around here with justin's trainings, etc.,

and i wanted to take photos in a beautiful place.

i mean, why spend all of that money on

a spot to vacation and not have seriously awesome photos to remember it by??

that being said, i found mikaela and she

worked her magic.

thought i'd share something a little different.

i did edit it, though.

my canadian penpal, beau, recently spent a month in hawaii.

he was actually in kaua'i during the tsunami.

knowing what his work load is like now that he's back home,

i asked if i could edit his shots.

i don't know that i did the right thing, though.

i'm just torturing myself with these beautiful shots!

i thought it only fair to pass the torture on to you. :)

today i had the opportunity to accompany my husband to work. as a community policing officer, he has attended LOVE Wichita projects for the past 3 years. i asked him if i could come out and take photos this year. we visited his 5 project houses throughout the morning. projects were completed by Eastminster(3 of the 5 houses), Maranatha and Westlink, where we attend. there was a lot of painting, yard work, rebuilding and even some critters at the houses.

this homeowner had siding replaced, yard work done and a new fence put up by the westlink crew. her pup needed to come out and inspect the progress(that and he didn't like the banging!).

an eastminster group found this guy when they moved out an old couch. :)

when their first garage door plan fell through,

they made a new plan.

maranatha replaced rotted boards, did lots of painting...

on some super high ladders, too.

one of our very close friends had his house worked on today, too.

he's been battling his kidneys this year, as they've

decided to fail his body and even had pneumonia today.

the young married group from eastminster rebuilt two porches for him, painted, did yard work, all to keep from future oci write ups.

on behalf of justin and myself, we thank you guys for all of your efforts today!!

the house project with westlink brought out two other police officers, both friends of justin's.

i thought it was hilarious that they stand the same way

whether they're in uniform or not. :)

first off, i want to thank everyone for their kind & encouraging words on my facebook page. i really enjoyed the photo weekend last week and hearing that you all enjoyed the images as much as i enjoyed taking them is a big plus! getting that much attention kinda made me sick to my stomach, though. it was slightly overwhelming. i'm a behind the scenes kind of girl...i run away from the spotlight...but i thank you, anyway. :)

i seem to have caused a stir with photo weekend...added some confusion about my availability as a photographer.

i am so sorry for that.

to those of you whom i have already turned down for shoots, i really did not mean to tease you with photos and then tell you i'm not able to do yours when you asked. that being said, i wanted to take the time to apologize to those people & others like them, with two reasons as to why i'm not available.

reason #1: i'm married to a navy reservist.

not just any reservist, either. one that is encountering deployment readiness. in this case, it calls for special courses, extra training, mandatory inspections. he's gone a lot. to give you a better idea of "a lot", there will be a month where he will only work 8 days at his civilian job, the rest will be reserved for military. and since the arkansas river isn't big enough for his ship to dock at, it means he's traveling.

reason #2: these two.

yes, i could easily find a babysitter.

yes, i could pawn them onto their grandparents.

or my sister.

or my friends.

however, i don't believe that they are someone else's responsibility.

more importantly, they need stability.

they need some routine in their lives.

they need to know that their mom is going

to be there when they wake up from nap.

they don't need to be shocked that someone else is

there filling my position, even if it is just for an hour.

they need to know that they're my first priority,

not my computer.

my little guy has become very confused by this change in routine. when his dad is gone, he asks if he's at work

or with the navy guys.

when daddy's traveling,

i get asked several times a day if we're going that day to the airport to get daddy.

there will be times when i am able to set up a special

weekend to do photos,

just like i did last weekend.

i don't mind doing several in one weekend.

i think it works better for the kids if they're

hanging out with family for a few hours one day,

as opposed to many random days.

i do want to do another weekend shoot.

i just don't know when yet.

in the meantime, you will see photos.

they'll be free work.

you will see photos from

a baby shoot.

you'll see shots from LOVE Wichita.

more than likely there will be photos posted from our

vacation and my sister's new baby.

also, i can tell you right now that i will not be doing photo shoots this summer.

i loathe the summer.

seriously.

i'm a big baby when i'm hot.

the heat gives me panic attacks.

it's not pretty.

i'm sorry if anyone had their hearts set on a summer shoot.

really i am.

i'm a people pleaser, so saying "no" hurts me more than

it hurts you!! :)

i do happen to know some amazing photographers in the

area that have free time, love to take photos(even in the

summer), and do an amazing job at it.

i would be more than willing to brag to you about

those people!

don't hesitate to ask.

i'm definitely not too busy to answer e-mails! :)

when another photographer asks you to take their photos,

it's kinda nerve-wracking.

that's exactly how this shoot was.

fun.

but scary.

this is my niece famie.

yes, i said niece.

she's two years younger than me.

her dad is my brother---and he's a lot of years older than me. :)

she started her photo business about a year before i did.

we shoot differently, so it's always neat to see her work.

this last year has been a very trying year for this family.

famie's health issues have been a huge trial for all of them and being able to document the four of them, with them happily interacting with each other, kinda hit my emotions.

okay, not kinda. i was a wreck while i was editing.

leave me alone. :)

i adore this photo of famie and jeromy. i'll be printing it for myself soon. :)

if you have a 2 and 4 year old, you know exactly how

challenging it is to have everyone looking AT the camera.

thankfully, i like to do more documenting than i do posing.

i hate posing.

with a passion.

i am no good at it.

my great niece and great nephew are the funniest little people ever.

hands down.

this is our neighbor, kaitlynn.

my kids love to talk to her through our chain-link fence.

she yells for the kids when they're out and always

yells, "new friends!"

her mom wanted 3 year photos,

so we went over to sedgwick co. park.

again, the wind followed. :)

we played peek-a-boo around the tree and with my camera. she'd look for me through the lens, i'd pop my head up and she'd laugh hysterically. so cute.

we had some extra company show up, as well.

kaitlynn's mom is expecting her 4th child in june.
we had to take a shot with her soon-to-be baby brother, nathan.

i realized i needed to post more shots from last weekend's shoots.

kayla's mom is engaged to my brother-in-law.

kayla is great fun to be around and laugh with.

she and i chat on facebook and text each other.

she's actually a junior, but is cramming her junior AND senior year together to graduate early.

her friend told me she hated photos.

serious oddball. she is such a photogenic girl!!

i learned during that session that if a 30 year old says "bust it out" in front of teens, it makes the teenagers laugh. apparently i'm too old to say that now. ugh. :)

with mr. antonio again.

i last saw him at his first birthday party last summer.

he's quite the little man now.

we took advantage of the greenery and water around oak park

and riverside park.

last night i had the opportunity to be a part of

another photographer get together with my photog

friends jackie, sarah & was able to finally meet a facebook

photog friend, heidi.

we did a little photo walk

with about 15 people(or so)

all armed with cameras,

shooting in the falling snow.

this is my favorite shot from the night.

my new friend suzy(great name, right?)

did a little modeling for us. :)

we did a q&a afterwards, talking about things that we liked to do, didn't like, lenses, experiences, etc. there were some things that were helpful, but other things geared towards those girls wanting to go big time. while we were talking, heidi mentioned OpLove.

she said it was for military, but i didn't have a clue what she was talking about at all.

OpLove is short for 'Operation Love ReUnited'.
there is an online list of photographers in the area that military families have to use for when they want to do photos of their loved ones deployment/return. i checked the list for our area. within a 50 mile radius, there are only 2 photographers registered. 2. and i guess that wouldn't be such a blow to me, but we have mcconnell afb so close by... to me 2 is a sad number.

even more so since i know my own husband will be deploying and we're going to be one of those families wanting photos done.

that being said, i want to encourage any photographers out there reading this, no matter where your home is, to register and give back to these families. you have no idea what these families go through. heck, i have no idea the bulk of what they go through, but i am slowly finding out first hand. i know they will appreciate you!

i'm looking into opening some time up for photos
saturday, april 9th.
i have a family member that wanted senior photos at 5pm, which i am planning on renting a lens for, so i want to get as much use out of the lens rental as i can! :) i should have a post up by april 1st pertaining to that weekend, so keep your eyes open for times.

i've been bitten with the spring cleaning bug. i will admit that i absolutely love to clean the house and remove unused items. my sister always says that i like to give everything away. not true. i just don't like things to sit and collect dust. so here are my latest items to add to my 'for sale' list.

my sigma 50-200mm 4-5.6 lens(CANON mount).

i purchased it from adorama last spring. i thought i'd use it a ton.

apparently i was wrong. my 50mm stays on my camera 24-7, so i think it's time to say farewell. i got it for $180 and i'm selling it for $90...with it goes my kit lens(canon 18-55mm w/out image stabilization). i will send the two to a new home for $90. i just want someone who could really use them. i hate for them to be here when someone may be needing them, but not able to afford them at full price.

out go the lenses, so out goes the heavy duty bag.

this is a tamrac velocity 9 bag. it has some serious lens room in it. and padding. a lot of padding. i've enjoyed it. it's protected my equipment from kids, rain, kids...it's been great.

this bag was going for $90-$100 on ebay last year. i got it brand new for $65. it was my awesome purchase of the year.
since i've had it for about a year, i'm selling it for $45. it's in almost new condition.
in the main carrying area i've held the kit lens, my 50mm, the telephoto and a 24-70mm, along w the body, all at the same time.
it has a sling strap that goes across your body, too. there are bags on ebay right now, the new ones have photos of the insides. i wanted to link it, but i was afraid that once i did, the bag that i linked it to would be sold on ebay.

every year i try to do photos of the kids for their

birthday invites.

aiden's b-day is the first week of may,

invitations take a bit of time to print,

then you add in the mailing time...

and you get photos in march. :)

i really hate march.

nothing has bloomed yet.

trees are dead.

grass is gross.

the only thing we have is water.

unfortunately, it looks gross 365 days of the year.

i decided to take him down to the keeper of the plains bridge

and shoot there.

this is what i got.

i always shoot him with his sunglasses on(well, not always cause i LOVE his pretty eyes, but when it's sunny i do.) today was a terrible photo day for him. we rushed after dinner to get down to the bridge during sunset. the kid's face was super dried out and i forgot to re-apply lotion this afternoon, he'd just eaten dinner and had food on his teeth, and had food on his collar. all that added to the fact that he couldn't find his sunglasses in the truck, killed my photo mood. we were there a whole 2.5 minutes and i said, "that's it. let's go home".

of course that was hardly a crowd pleaser. we'd been talking about going down to "captain hook's bridge" all day.

so to make it up to them, despite how i felt physically, we stopped by sedgwick co. park for a while.

this is the joy a photographer who tries to capture kids has to look forward to.

one likes the camera. one has adhd.

no matter where you go, there is always something they feel is more important to be looking at.

four eyes never want to look directly at your camera.

oh, and let's not forget the hair. there's always hair blowing, especially in kansas.

for me, there's always that blasted boy. he stuck his tongue out at me! haha.

so i rolled with it.

"show each other your silly faces."

"emily, show your brother your face."

"okay now, aiden, show your sister your face."

that's my favorite photo of the day.

all of those were shot in a 3 minute time frame.

i don't mess around when it comes to photographing my kids.

especially at the park, since all they wanna do is go play!

photographer lesson of the day:

acting ridiculous is the only thing that ever saves

photo shoots.

remember that.

it may just save your sanity.

the swing photos aren't really crisp and clear(at least not on super zoom in lightroom), but i loved them too much not to include them. looking at them is actually making me feel peaceful.
well, that and the fact that i have 'sleeping at last' playing in my ears. they really calm my nerves. :)

know what else calms my nerves?? sleeping kids.

ahhhhhhh.

first awards ceremony.

this morning i was up and out of the house by 6:15am.

that in itself was a miracle.

however, i had a very important place to be.

on base.

today was his drill day,

but more importantly his awards ceremony.

he was awarded junior sailor of the year for the area reserves.

this is the first time that i've been to

a military ceremony of any kind,

so it was a big moment for me.

i was able to spend the morning with him,

tagging along as he went from office to office to have things signed off on for his next trip,

short sit down conversations with different chiefs,

as well as getting his evals signed.

i stood a lot today. :)

it was well worth it, though.

my formal "i'm taking a break" post.

i'm going to be on pause for...

a while.

when i started taking photos,

i did so working around my husband's

work schedule.

he was off friday's.

he worked one weekend a month.

i had the routine down.

2011 has decided that the routine is boring.

it needs to spice things up.

okay, okay...

actually, this is why i'm on a break.

it would seem that the mister doesn't like his already

busy work schedule and wants to add more to it.

well, fine.

we'll let him.

for me, however, that means i need to put

things on hold for a bit.

due to a schedule that moves back and forth,

violently,

i'm not as free as i'd like to be.

i'm sure there'll be an ocassional miracle

and i'll get out of the house

to do a photo or two,

but i'm not in the position to promise anything this year.

i am intent on making an out-of-town trip

for a certain senior girl,

but that's as far as the plans go.

in the meantime,

i'll be at home catching this.

it was warmer out to do photos??

well, apparently people didn't like that idea!

i did 3 shoots over the weekend,

all had been scheduled at the end of the week.

AND they were all friends of mine.

some really good ones, at that.

the jones family:

location- college hill park

i went to high school with steven jones.

rarely did anyone call him by his first name,

instead we all called him 'jonesy'.

in fact, my husband met him before

we were married and that's about all he knows

steven by, too.

so, it was very difficult to not call him 'jonesy' at

the shoot!

this was the first time i'd met his wife,

natasha(though i'd heard about her while they were dating

and knew when jonesy was going to propose to her),

so it was exciting to finally meet her..

and their little ones.

unfortunately for all of them,

it was a cold meeting.

and windy.

thank goodness for warm props. :)

wilson-brown family:

i never call them the 'wilson-brown family'.

in fact, if i'm being honest,

i rarely remember what tari's last name is,

even though she's been married for like 2 years now.

if you've visited 'the whyte house' blog,

you've seen her family before.

to those who haven't,

this is my best friend.

she's the best because she is tall

and can reach everything for me. :)

(haha, tari!)

this is my old partner in crime.

we use to work together,

run the building together,

play handball in the hall when our boss was gone.

(we made up a game with a bouncy ball :))

i even had her son in my pre-k class.

awesome times.

she and i are both fans and clients

of jackie cooper,

so i about fell out of my chair when she

mentioned me taking her photos.

(jackie's schedule was full, of course. :))

getting paid to hang out with your best friend is

a nice way to spend an hour. :)

oh, and it was really warm that day, too.

well, the boy was there enough that he

but we had a "no boys allowed" rule. :)

i was roommates with lisa when she first met

her husband, andy.

i pressured her into dating him.

we were roommates til she got married,

5 months before i did.

there were a lot of shenanigans at our apartment.

mostly due to andy being there. :)

seven years of marriage later,

andy and lisa are a family of 4.

lisa has always had long bangs, grown out with her hair.
now she's sportin' short ones...she looks like a mom now.

i received an e-mail a couple of weeks

ago from jackie cooper letting me

know about a photographer get-together

she was putting together.

beginner and professional photographers

from the area came out,

as well as some families/models for us

all to take photos of.

i didn't get every photographers name(seeing as how i 15 minutes late--ugh), but i will edit in more name as i find them all out!

photographers were:

*jackie cooper

*jenna unruh--i've followed her blog for a while,

so i was kinda taken back when she introduced herself

to me!

*leah jung--we ran into her when jackie was

taking our family photos last month.

*jaclyn cage

another photographer was casey cooper,

husband to jackie.

i mention him because the man came home

early from a hunting trip to join us.

way cool.

i've been asking jackie when he was going to

jump on the bandwagon and make her change

her photo name to

"jackie AND casey cooper photo".

glad to see he's making his way there.

oh, AND i found out that we were both

PK's (preacher's kids)!

can't wait to see your work, casey!

since i follow/stalk ashley campbell's blog,

i've seen what a 'snap shops' weekend

looks like(kinda what jackie put on,

but for beginners).

however, most people don't so here ya go--

(the next 2 were shot by jackie...figured i'd add them since i'm never in photos. :))

one thing that i found extremely helpful from the time out
in delano was how quickly i was COLD. don't get me wrong, i'm not a wimp in the cold. i'd much rather have cold weather than hot. but when i'm cold, i shake. bad.

shaking and photos don't mix.

when i loaded my photos, 70% had visible camera shake in them.
man, i was mad.
lesson learned.

i think i'll be taking a break from shooting outside til it's a tad warmer!!!

ashley: senior 2011

meet ashley.

i've known ashley since she was about 6.
when her mom asked if i would do her SENIOR photos i said, "sure! it's a little early, though. she has 4 more years til she's a senior." apparently not. :)

for as long as i've known her, she has been quiet and shy. i use to wave at her when she was in grade school or say "hi" after church and she was either already hiding behind her mom or heading towards her after my 'hello'. :)

so for me, seeing shy ashley open up during our shoot was so much fun.

did i mention it was windy??

that's 'cause it wasn't.

it was suuuper windy.

thanks to ashley(and her mom and niece) for coming out on the windiest day of the year. :)

ken lockwood from eagle valley raptor center in

cheney, ks came out to visit the pre-k'ers yesterday.

the EVRC brings in birds in need of rehabilitating.

some have been injured, while others were raised by humans and aren't able to live in the wild.

ken brought out a video to show the kids,

as well as some owl friends.

avatar, the spectacled owl(originates from south america, but last lived at the tulsa zoo) and templeton, the hoot owl.

templeton brought his own lunch...

a white mouse. :)

i think this one above is named hannah montana, the screech owl and then miley cyrus is the barn owl. the barn owl was my favorite.

a big rule for the owl show-n-tell was for the kids to remain quiet, even if the owls tried to fly off.

they all wanted to pet the owl.

some parents had some photo ops for their kids...

they all were able to pet feathers afterwards.

after my friend dina helped me out with a location

i am so glad i had an excuse to be there.

dina did such a great job with the decor!!

dina and i share the same vintage taste,

so the shower decor was right up my alley!

3 yr old representative from: the taylor family.

what a doll! the taylor's had been nominated and had won the drawing for the free photo session. since the whole family couldn't be there, their youngest, sayla, was the main feature. not knowing why lisa had nominated their family, i didn't learn about their circumstances til after i arrived. their oldest son(20 yrs old) was jumped downtown and severely beaten. he's currently in joplin, working through his 2nd round of brain rehab. i know that this family would appreciate the extra prayers for his recovery and their continued strength!! it was such a blessing to be able to talk with mom, heather, about their family, and watch her interact with her daughter. AND i also found out that she was karsten's (my nephew) computer teacher at st. joe christian school! :)

a big thanks to the taylor family for letting a stranger take photos for you!!

the smith's:

i met pete and lisa smith when i was in college. they were dorm parents at the time for the guys dorm. they even had a little guy of their own, 3 yr old noah. pete was the assistant soccer coach, as well as my psychology teacher. when lisa asked if i'd do photos, i told her only if pete changed my psychology grade from 10 years ago. :)

no longer working for mcc, pete is the associate pastor at my brother-in-law's church. it's always nice to visit our family in missouri and be welcomed at their church by familiar faces!

i have to comment about the first photo--
lisa wanted to have everyone's heads in a circle. great idea. in theory. it was 10:30 am and the sun was getting high...so the brightness in the photo isn't due to editing. :)
i love how their son is lying on the ground, like the sun has killed him, while the others squint and cover their eyes with their hands. haha.

first i want to say, i have NO idea why blogger lets some of my paragraphs be centered,

while others aren't.

very annoying.

Last night was National Night Out,

and since it's a community party,

my husband was out and about.

As a Community Policing Officer,

we know that this night is a night he can't take off.

Despite the heat,
